Welcome to my very first blog. My name is Shannon, I'm from New Hampshire but I moved to Southern California in January 2010. I think the title pretty much sums up what this blog will be about. I'm a plus size girl. I've been a heavy girl since around the 6th grade and horse crazy since before I can even remember! Even at age 23 I still turn my head to see the horses if we happen to pass by them in the car. Well my family has never been wealthy, horseback riding lessons were out of the question when I was a kid, let alone getting my own horse. When I was 19 I finally looked into horseback riding lessons. I was terrified at the idea of showing up and being laughed out of the barn because of my weight, but I was up front with my first instructor and that wasn't the case.
I think those lessons were the best things that ever happened to me and the start of an even deeper and hopefully lifelong passion. I only took lessons for a 3 or 4 months before I stopped so that I could start school. I took an additional 4 months' worth of lessons about two years later; I had to stop because of financial hardship. But here we are two years later, I found the most incredible riding instructor. In case you were wondering about the picture that is my FIRST horse. My husband recently bought her for me; she is a 9 year old, 14h mare Haflinger. I am beyond psyched but she is 9 hours north of us and won't be getting shipped down here until the end of March.
I've been researching horse care for years but since I've purchased her I've gone into overdrive research mode, reading everything I can get my hands on. I've got a few weeks to research, buy what I need, and find a good boarding stable.
